Connie Martin, M. A., tells the stories passed down to her Great Grandmother Lizzie of how her family used quilts containing hidden codes and secret messages to guide enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Martin shares eighteen quilt patterns in replica quilts. Connie’s mother, Dr. Clarice Boswell, wrote Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom, and her book is currently being made into a movie called “Freedom Code.” Please register for this Illinois Humanities Road Scholar program.
